February RC tests are due Wednesday, February 13. This is one day before midterm, so your test results will impact your progress report grade. You may turn in your RC report and receive credit for it any time through the 13th. Once or twice a week, I go through the class folders and record RC test scores. Great way to raise your grade! Don't wait until the last minute to take a test. Keep up with your reading!
The next RC due date is Wednesday, January 9. Be sure you are reading within your HIGHEST Lexile earned this year. Print your reports and have them in the folder by 3pm Jan. 9. This is the last RC due date of the quarter and semester, and it is the last opportunity to earn extra credit. Any passing grade (16+) on a second test over a book within your HIGHEST Lexile earned this year is worth extra credit.
***Passing a book within your highest Lexile during January, February, and March allows you to read books outside your Lexile range. More details to come.

The current RC due date is Wednesday, November 28. Students must have a report in their class folder by 3pm. Please keep in mind, if you have not received prior approval of your book on your contract, you are in violation of your contract and will not receive credit for any other book(s) read. Changes to the contract are at Mrs. Vaughan's discretion, not the student's, and will not be done within 2 weeks of the due date.
RC reports are due by Wednesday, October 17 by 3pm. Remember to put your report in your class file folder near the window on the south wall
Students, remember that you MUST be reading a book within your own Lexile range or requirements as outlined below. Just because you are reading a book that is in a series does not mean that you are excused from these requirements. As we complete our reading contracts/Reading Counts records on Monday for our October 17 due date, keep in mind that you must get your second or extra credit books approved as well. Fill in your contract, then bring it and your book to me for approval. Be sure it meets YOUR reading requirements and that your form is COMPLETELY filled out BEFORE you bring your form to me. If your book in NOT on your contract or has not been approved on your contract, you will not received credit for the book when you turn in your report. Prior approval for reading a book for credit is required. And what does our Latin root -pri- mean?

The new Reading Counts (RC) due date is Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Any test taken between September 20 and October 17 will count for October. Please remember that you are required to print your own Reading Counts "Student Reading Report" and submit it to your class folder on the counter in front of the window on the south wall.
RC grades will be entered in Harmony approximately once a week. An 'E' for an Extra Credit RC Test (or any other assignment) means Excused- the student was not required to do the assignment and did not do it or did not score high enough for it to help their grade. Students may only take tests and earn credit for books that fall within their Lexile requirements. Those requirements are listed below.
Please ask Mrs. Vaughan if you have any questions about how to: determine your Lexile range, determine if a book falls within your Lexile range, print reports, choose a printer, find your class folder, or anything else.

Students may take RC (Reading Counts) tests in the middle school library before school Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri. beginning at 7:30A.M. and after school Monday through Friday until 3P.M. Other teachers allow students to take tests during their class if the student has completed his or her work. Students are able to get a pass from my room that will enable them to come to my room at lunch time to take a test or have a quiet place to read.
Passing is 80%. If one scores lower, they are able to retake the test 24 hours (or more) later. I will record the student's highest grade earned. If more than one "good" score is earned, I will record the extra ones as extra "raw" points or extra credit:
20/20 = 5 points
19/20 = 4 points
18/20 = 3 points
17/20 = 2 points
16/20 = 1 point
Extra credit books must still fall within the student's Lexile range. Students who do not take or pass extra credit books will see the letter E in place of a grade. E always means excused.
