12/3/12- Read library book. Be sure every paragraph has at least one transition or transitional phrase. See your notes for suggestions. Body paragraphs will need transitions or transitional phrases to transition from one paragraph to another. Remember to use your green colored pencil to underline your transitions and transitional phrases. Use complex sententces to increase the variety of sentence patterns used. Example: Once we got to the hotel, it was so late at night that we fell right into bed. Be sure you have a comma separating your dependent clause that comes before an independent clause. Be sure your 5 tab dividers are here tomorrow.
12/4/12- Rewrite your web if necessary (too messy, written other than horizontally) and turn in both copies (or 1 if you don't need to rewrite) on Wednesday for a grade. See Monday. Be sure you have spent time thinking about this and revising your draft. Writing binders should have 5 tabs: Tracking Progress," "Writing," "Drafts," "Completed Work," and "Ideas." Torn holes in papers should be repaired with reinforcement tabs provided, and all papers should be in behind the proper tab. For your draft, all paragraphs need numbered and pages need numbered if you have not done so already. Draft in pencil, double spaced of course, and revise (you or your critical friend) in colored pen. Do NOT throw away any pages! Simple draw a line through the paper. You may need some writing off of it later. Plus, Mr. DeFries and I want to see all stages of your writing when it is turned in. Bring USB drive by Friday.
12/5/12- Turn in web (and original if recopied). Read library book. Work on finishing prescribed A+ Reading Information lessons. Due Jan. 9 worth 100 points.

Students are not always coming to class prepared. This is costing them HAWK points, but more importantly, it deprives them of the ability to participate in and receive benefit from the day's lesson. Students need their writing binder with their notebook secured inside, their web/plan, their old and new drafts. They also need a pencil, an eraser, a colored pen, and their colored pencils.
This week we will continue to use English and Social Studies time to work on their narratives.
11/26/12- Learn the difference between too much and too little detail/description. Continue to add sensory (5 senses) details, emotions, and other description. Underline in blue colored pencil.
11/27/12- Learn that sentence variety increases style and interest. Review compound sentences. Finish writing rough draft of narrative. Students cannot participate in peer conferences over each of the skills being taught or make revisions to their draft to include these skills if the draft has not been completed. Be sure every paragraph has at least one compound sentence. Under in red colored pencil.
11/28/12- Learn how transitional words and phrases help sequence, changes in time, and changes in setting. Use at least one transitional word or phrase per paragraph. Underline in green colored pencil. Study Propaganda Techniques (in notes) using flashcards with examples. Retake of test is Friday. RC Tests due today by 3pm.
11/29/12- Take English/Language Arts Predicitive Acuity Test B (English class only). Keep working on A+ lessons prescribed from the Reading Information (RI) Pretest. Study Propaganda Techniques for tomorrow's retest.
11/30/12- Understand the paragraphing/indenting of dialogue and how to punctuate it. Make revisions to narrative where dialogue was used.

Students will be using their English and Social Studies time all week to work on their narratives.
11/19/12- Learn to identify and use narrative techniques for introductions that will add a "hook" to one's writing: questions, dialogue, action, interesting fact, and unusual or descriptive image. Peer conference to be sure each has a "hook." It should be underlined in yellow highlighter. Note: some students are behind. All students should have an approved web, a written introduction, and a highlighted "hook" by the end of the day Monday. Use homework time if necessary.
11/20/12- Learn to use writing that shows rather than just tells. Example: I was scared. or I was so scared that my knees were knocking together, and my heart felt like it would pound right out of my chest! Work on paragraph 2.
Some students still do not have a finished web or a rough draft of their first paragraph. They MUST work during lunch time in my room Tuesday and Wednesday and use HOMEWORK time at home to get caught up. This is a long process. We have already been working on it for 3 weeks, which is a bit longer than we should to get an organized web/plan and a decent introduction. Falling behind and staying behind causes students to not be able to apply the daily mini-lesson because they are not ready for that skill, or they cannot work with a critical friend for a peer conference over their work to look for evidence of specific skills or attributes because they have not written anything or very little. It is critical that students follow my instructions to use time outside of class to get caught up.
11/21/12- Peer conference with critical friend to be sure writing is showing rather than telling. Continue writing paragraph 2 (or 3).

Parents, our children are never too old for us to read aloud to them. One of the benefits includes increased fluency, or oral reading skills, for the child. When she or he hears fluent reading- done with voice, character, inflection, an indication that punctuation changes the way one reads aloud or silently, the child has a model of what reading should sound like. Another benefit of reading aloud to our child(ren) is that they see that we value reading and value them. Kids also see our interest or love of reading when they see us reading silently for pleasure. So whether we choose to read aloud their library book, the book we are enjoying, a magazine, articles from the newspaper, religious material, a great adventure story or an autobiography of someone we admire, our children have much to gain!

Students may take RC (Reading Counts) tests before school Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri. beginning at 7:30A.M. and after school Monday through Friday until 3P.M. Other teachers allow students to take tests during their class if the student has completed his or her work. Students are able to get a pass from my room that will enable them to come to my room at lunch time to take a test. Tests must be completed and reports submitted by 3:05 (note new later time) on Wednesday, September 19. Passing is 80%. Anything lower and they are able to retake the test just over 24 hours (or over) later. I will record the student's highest grade earned. If more than one "good" score is earned, I will record the extra ones as extra "raw" points:
20/20 = 5 points
19/20 = 4 points
18/20 = 3 points
17/20 = 2 points
16/20 = 1 point
Students who do not take or pass extra credit books, or whose score on an extra test would otherwise lower their average, will see the letter E in place of a grade. E always means excused. I wish that was explained somewhere on Harmony for you.
Remember, there is NO Lexile requirement for the September 19 due date. However, there IS a Lexile requirement for any test taken September 20th and after. I will recopy it below from farther down on this continuously running webpage.
Requirements for October-March:
Students with a Lexile <900 (less than 900) must choose books that are ABOVE their Lexile, but no more than 150-200 points above in order to be successful on the test.
Students with a Lexile between 900 and 1100 must choose books above 900, but no more than 150-200 above.
Students reading >1100 should choose books no less than 1000.
Reading contracts will be signed and students will be held accountable for the books they choose to read and for knowing their Lexile. Students have approximately 4 weeks between due dates. They should NOT take 4 weeks to read a book and pass a test. Waiting until the due date is a very bad idea. Class time will not be provided that day for tests. Being absent on the due date does not excuse or cure your zero. You should not wait until the end of the 4 weeks to read and take a test.

RC Tests in any Lexile are due by next Wed., Sept. 19. Students must print a report and turn it in for credit. Any test taken Sept. 20 or later MUST be the student's Lexile requirements. Scroll down for details.
Students have new library books as of Friday, August 25. The first Reading Counts due date is Wednesday, September 19 by 2:40pm. After passing a test (80% or higher) a test, students are responsible for printing out their reading progress and submitting it to the folder for their class period. There is no Lexile or reading level requirement for the September due date. Students have been encouraged to read a variety of levels and genres from the library or their own collections, as long as they can take a test over the book. One (1) book is required by September 19; however, additional books read and passed by the due date will count for extra credit as long as the student has no missing assignments.
